Our Story: kamoka pearls

We want you to be able to wear Considered Jewellery with pride, as an expression of your values and a commitment to having a positive impact in the world.

We only make jewellery if we know where the materials came from and that they were responsibly produced. We’d love to share the story of our Kamoka pearl pendants with you.

a glimpse into the world of kamoka

Nestled in the pristine waters of the South Pacific, Kamoka Pearls is more than just a pearl farm. It's testimony to a family's unwavering commitment to sustainable practices and the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.

Kampoka Pearl Farm

Kamoka Pearl Farm cultivates South Sea pearls from oysters grown in the nutrient-rich lagoon of Ahe Atoll, a small atoll located approximately 300 miles northeast of Tahiti in French Polynesia.

For decades, this family-owned farm has nurtured a harmonious relationship with the marine environment, ensuring that every pearl harvested is a result of sustainable farming methods.

Unlike many pearl farms that can harm local ecosystems, Kamoka hangs oysters in shallow zones near the reef where they can be cleaned naturally by tropical fish. The farm protects the area by preventing fishing in the farming zone, creating a reserve for fish populations to reproduce and conserve local coral reefs.

The team's commitment to ethical practices extends beyond pearl farming. All farm employees are paid a fair wage and live together in a communal setting , which helps foster a shared sense of enterprise within the local community. The farm's electricity is supplied by solar and wind power, and all freshwater comes from collecting and storing rainwater.

from lagoon to unique jewellery

Baroque pearls from the farm have been set in a collection of 20 individually numbered Considered pendants. The term baroque refers to the amorphous shape of the pearl. Rather than spherical, they can be anything from a round pearl with a bump on the side to wild and undulating. Each with a unique character. Our pendant casings have been hand carved around each pearl to celebrate their organic shape.

We've chosen to use keshi pearls, which are created by nature. They don't contain the circular nucleus normally used to create cultured pearls. Instead the oyster puts it's own unique stamp on the shape and creates a 100% solid pearl.

The pearls are referred to as 'black pearls' however, the colour is more of a silver tone with blues and greys.

Choose from recycled Sterling silver, or recycled gold vermeil. The silver used to make these pendants also has its own unique provenance story. Find our more here.
